Amber Campbell Poster
Spring 2026 | Typography II
Objective
Create an experimental typographic poster for an event focused on athlete Amber Campbell. Manipulate and arrange type elements and image symbols to convey a message about the influential figure.
Research
Amber Campbell is a three-time Olympic hammer thrower. She was born in Cincinnati, Ohio and attended Coastal Carolina University, where she later continued to coach track and field. Amber is an insanely driven competitor and a powerhouse in the throwing circle, but she also has a caring heart for the community. She has worked to start an after-school program for young girls who struggle with being overweight, as that is a struggle she faced growing up.
Physical Typographic Exploration
In this typographic exploration workshop, I printed out words and phrases that I might want to include in my poster, and distorted the text with glass, water, sandpaper, and tearing to create unique type that I could use on my poster.
Initial Digital Ideation
Next, I explored poster concepts digitally. I incorporated my physical workshop explorations into some designs, and used Photoshop and computer effects for others.
Concept Refinement
In my digital exploration, I landed on a concept that used the design technique of fusion to combine image with type. I wanted to showcase the spinning movement and power of a hammer throw athlete with the circular lines around the image of Amber Campbell. I also worked to incorporate more visual cues of hammer throwing with the ball, lines depicting measurement, and using a throwing circle net to add texture.
